There is a fitness center in just about every neighborhood filled with equipment to fit the requirements and personality of just about every type of person imaginable. Whether you want to workout with machines, cables, free weights, with same-sex only, one on one personal training, etc. does not matter. It does not matter for there will be a fitness center within driving range to satisfy your personal needs. Each club has a large variety of equipment and programs that are guaranteed to give anyone the workout that they desire.
A health club or fitness center is basically the only place to go these days to have access to a large variety of equipment to exercise with. It is very rare to find a gym these days where only bodybuilder and powerlifter types can go and get a good workout. Not that a health club or fitness center is not a good place to exercise seriously it is just that they are often filled with people who are not as serious as those who used to frequent gyms. Many a health club now cater to people who are interested in more than just a good workout as they are often there to socialize, sit in a sauna, hang out at the smoothie bar, etc.
Basically, the atmosphere of a health club or fitness center is different from a gym in that they are now built specifically to bring in large sums of money. Gyms used to be built to have a place where people could go to workout hard and get in shape around those that were like-minded. Even places like Powerhouse Gym that used to have more of a hardcore atmosphere filled with the latest weight machines and tons of free weights has changed to more of a fitness center in order to cater to those who might have been too intimidated before to train with bodybuilders and powerlifters. Not to suggest that this is a bad thing as businesses are in business to make money it is simply that there are fewer and fewer places for serious athletes to workout in.
A fitness center is actually superior to a gym in that they are absolutely huge with rooms filled with every piece of exercise equipment imaginable. For example, there are rooms full of treadmills, stair climbers and stationary bikes, rooms full of free weights, rooms full of cable and weight machines, swimming pools, racquetball and basketball courts and just about everything imaginable for anyone to get a good workout with. The fitness center has now officially replaced the gym as hundreds of millions of people now exercise on a regular basis. As opposed to the past when gyms were the only place to workout in when only a small number of people exercised regularly.
